The Work Before the Welcome: A Hunger-Free Volunteer Spotlight on Stan Bobo

When a food distribution begins, people see boxes being handed out, volunteers greeting families, and food reaching the hands of the community members. What they may not see is the careful work that begins long before the first person arrives and continues after everyone has gone home.

Stan Bobo is one of the volunteers faithfully carrying out that work. Stan began volunteering at the Nacogdoches HOPE Food Pantry, the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued serving faithfully ever since. Over the years his steady presence and willingness to complete the work behind the scenes have made him a familiar and valued part of the distribution.

Before each produce distribution, Stan carefully prepares and reinforces the boxes that will hold the food. He makes sure each box has enough support so the items will not fall through. He handles this responsibility with patience and care because he understands  that even the strength of a box can affect how safely food reaches a family.

When asked what he wished more people understood about food distributions, Stan said he wished people knew about all the layers of work involved in getting food to people. Stan and a small group of dedicated volunteers stay after each distribution to gather and prepare the boxes again so they will be ready for the following week. There may not be many volunteers helping with this part of the process, but their steady service helps keep the distribution  moving from one week to the next.

For Stan, this work is more than a task. He does it wholeheartedly because he knows he is doing something meaningful for the community. His service reminds us that some of the most important contributions are made quietly before the doors open, after the crowd leaves, and in the details most people never notice.

Every carefully reinforced box reflects preparation. Every hour given reflects commitment. Every act of service helps food travel a little more safely from the hands of a volunteer to the table of a neighbor.

Through our Hunger Free Volunteer Spotlight, we are honored to recognize Mr. Stan and the many volunteers whose dedication keeps local food pantries and distributions operating. Their work may not always be visible, but its impact is felt throughout the community.

Thank you, Stan, for serving with care, humility, and heart.
